Douglas County carries on Dolly's dream of books for children, but we need you to help pay $1.10 for each book!
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a “book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income.” One book a month is mailed to each participating child at their home from age zero to five. A child can be registered at any time before the age of five, and will receive an age appropriate book from the Imagination Library book list. This international initiative was begun in 1995 in Tennessee. Dolly, inspired by her father who was unable to read and write, seeks to empower young children to love reading.
However, Dolly and Kansas State funding does not pay the entire cost of the books: that's where you come in to help us cover $1.10 per book, and over 2,300 local children receive books every month!
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is available throughout Douglas County. This dream was made a reality through the grassroots efforts of a group of dedicated volunteers, the fiscal sponsorship of Success By 6 of Douglas County, generous individual donors, and the support of the Kansas Health Foundation, the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Foundation, and the Douglas County Community Foundation.
